Developing markets-focused re/insurance group Africa Specialty Risks (ASR) has appointed Tunu Sokiri as Chief Operations Officer, overseeing all operational and technology functions across the firm.
In particular, he will lead the transformation and growth of ASR’s infrastructure, data, AI, and digital strategy.
Tunu will also oversee ASR’s claims function, ensuring it “continues to deliver seamless service” to clients.
Tunu joins ASR from Travelers Europe, where he was head of Europe operations since 2021.
He has previously held a series of operations and technology-focused roles at Brit, SCOR, Munich Re, Chaucer, ACE and Faraday, having started his career at Arthur Andersen Business Consulting in 2001.
Based in London, Tunu will report to Mikir Shah, CEO of ASR, who commented, “I’m pleased to welcome Tunu to ASR as our first COO.
“Our significant growth to date has been underpinned by diligent work to align our systems and technology to our business ambitions.
“As we continue on our strategy to be the reinsurer of choice for developing markets, it’s essential that we have a leading executive who can ensure our operational function is appropriate for this goal.
“I look forward to working closely with Tunu as we continue to enable sustainable economic development by fulfilling unmet insurance needs.”
Tunu added, “Ensuring we have leading operational and technology capabilities is essential as ASR continues to build its presence in Africa and wider developing markets.
“The tremendous growth that ASR has enjoyed so far has been supported by a leading claims function and a solid operational foundation, which allows underwriters to deliver excellent service to clients and brokers.
“Working with Mikir and the wider team, I’m excited about advancing our operational strategy to align with our growth ambitions.”
